Asia Gold-India Gold discounts reach 8-month highs as record prices curb the demand

This week, gold discounts in India reached a record-high of more than eight months as the demand for gold fell after spot prices soared past records.

Indian dealers offer a discount Up to $41 per ounce compared to official domestic prices.

The domestic gold price hit a record of 89 796 rupees for 10 grams this week. It has risen by over 15% this year.

In China, gold was traded at a discounted price of between $2 and 16 dollars below spot prices.

Ross Norman, an analyst independent, stated that domestic gold prices are now at a substantial discount to the international price. This reflects a sharp decline in demand locally.

Data from the China Gold Association revealed that China's gold demand in 2024 will be down 9.58 percent on an annual basis to 985.31 tons due to high gold prices. According to data, the number of gold jewellery purchases, which make up half of total sales, fell by 24.7%, to 532.02 tonnes.

Norman stated that the Chinese demand for gold ETFs is still strong, and the central bank, although at modest levels, continues to accumulate some gold.

Singapore gold was traded with a premium between $1.80 and $2.50. Hong Kong dealers charged between $0.50 to $2 per ounce in premiums .

Peter Fung said that the demand for safe havens is driving people to hesitate when buying gold.
