The UK's PM's spokesperson says that the UK hasn't seen any details about Trump tariffs on steel and cannot estimate their impact.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir starmer stated on Monday that the UK has not yet seen any details about President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum. The government will engage with Trump as necessary.

Trump announced on Sunday that he will impose new tariffs of 25% on all imports of steel and aluminum into the U.S. on top of metals duties already in place. This is another major step up in his trade policy overhaul.

Starmer's spokesperson said that while it is impossible to speculate about the impact of these tariffs without knowing more details, Britain prepares itself for any eventuality.

The spokesman said, "I haven’t seen any detailed suggestions following overnight reporting. But we will engage as appropriate."

Separately the industry body UK Steel stated that any tariffs will be a "devastating" blow to the sector and harm high-end exports of steel to the U.S. which is Britain's largest export market, after the European Union.

The UK exports approximately 200,000 tonnes of metal per year, valued at over 400 million pounds. $1 = 0.8076 lbs. (Reporting and writing by Elizabeth Piper; Editing by Sachin Ravikumar).
