Chile selects 6 sites for private lithium projects

Chile's government has chosen 6 priority locations for brand-new lithium extraction jobs to be led by private companies, the South American nation's. mining minister said on Thursday.

In October, the federal government will start seeking advice from Native. neighborhoods near those areas, while propositions from personal firms. will be due Dec. 31, Mining Minister Aurora Williams added.

Chile is the world's second-biggest manufacturer of the key. battery metal lithium, with output presently originating from just. two companies in the Atacama salt flat.

The government is working to enhance production, both. through efforts spearheaded by state-run copper giant Codelco. , and by motivating private financial investment.

Chilean authorities have already gotten about 20. statements of interest for the six concern locations, which. encompass 5 salt flats and one lagoon, and were identified as. high capacity for lithium extraction.

We believe there will work competitors, given. that these are the locations of greatest interest, Williams told a. press conference.

To win government approval for lithium extraction,. private firms must have experience in the lithium worth chain,. appropriate financial resources, and hold a minimum of 80% of the. mining concessions in the proposed task location.

Finance Minister Mario Marcel said the statement of. the six priority locations keeps Chile on track with its target to. establish 3 or 4 new lithium projects during President. Gabriel Boric's administration, and boost lithium production. 70% by 2030.

We're taking all the essential actions to satisfy these. goals, Marcel stated.
