Brugge's coach speaks to a dead mother before the match

Nicky Hayen, the coach of Club Brugge said that he would talk to his mother who died before Tuesday's second-leg match in their Champions League playoff with Atalanta. He feels this ritual helps him.

He said at a Monday press conference that he always talked to his mother before the match. She died four years earlier, far too soon. Brugge is preparing to defend its 2-1 advantage from last week's Belgian first leg.

"Last season, I told her that we were going to do something crazy before the playoffs in the Belgian league. The result was winning the title."

"Am I deeply spiritual?" "Am I deeply religious?" No, but it's something that I feel. Hayen continued, "I must believe that there is something."

The 44-year old was appointed interim manager of Brugge in March 2013 and led the club to victory in the Belgian Championship.

In June, he signed a contract as a coach. Brugge is currently in the second place of the Belgian league and in this season's Champions League Playoff.

He predicted a difficult night for Bergamo, on Tuesday.

"Atalanta is definitely going to play more offensively." They also want to dominate at home. We expect a tough evening, as they also have a team to do that.

"We must play our own game, and show tactical discipline that was last week."

"My strategy for the match is unchanged because we won 2-1 last weekend. Atalanta has a strong team. We did well. I have faith in my team. "We play with a lot guts, but this must not turn into naivety." Mark Gleeson, Cape Town. Edited by Pritha Sakar
