Fires caused by a drone attack in Ukraine force flight cancellations at Russian airports

Russian officials and media reported on Monday that Ukraine's drone attack overnight targeted fuel and energy installations in Russia. The attack sparked a fire and forced the suspension of several flights in the Astrakhan area.

Igor Babushkin said that the Ukrainian armed forces had attempted to launch a drone strike on objects in the area, including fuel and power facilities, on Telegram, the messaging app.

A drone that crashed ignited a fire. No one was injured.

Babushkin didn't say what was burning. Baza, an official Russian Telegram news channel, reported that Ukraine had attacked a gas-processing plant near Astrakhan.

Rosaviatsia, the Russian aviation safety watchdog, announced that it would suspend flights at Astrakhan airport, as well as four other airports in Kazan Nizhnekamsk Saratov Ulyanovsk for air safety.

Rosaviatsia had temporarily suspended flights at the Volgograd Airport in southern Russia. However, flights have been restored since, according to a Telegram post.

No official reports were made on an attack on Volgograd. However, Baza and other Russian Telegram news channels reported on a coordinated drone attack which reportedly targeted a refinery.

The Baza reports could not be independently verified. Ukraine has not yet responded.

Kyiv said in the past that its attacks within Russia were aimed at destroying key infrastructure for Moscow's war effort, including energy, transport and defense.

The President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that they were also a reaction to Russia's continuing bombing of Ukraine after the start of Moscow
