IMF Board to Review Sri Lanka Staff Agreement in Coming Weeks

IMF spokesperson?Julie Kozack stated on Thursday that the executive board of the International Monetary Fund will'review' a staff-level agreement reached with Sri Lanka in the coming weeks.

She told reporters that once the Extended Fund Facility agreement with the IMF is approved by the IMF board, Sri Lanka would have access to $700 million. Sri Lanka and the IMF reached an agreement at staff level in April that required reforms to ensure growth, including fuel levies.

The 'island nation' is trying to recover from the worst economic crisis it has experienced in decades. This led to a default on foreign debt in 2022 and a $2.9 billion IMF bailout program. However, the conflict in the Middle East created new challenges.

As a result, Sri Lanka has seen a rise in energy costs, as have many other Asian nations.

Kozack stated that Sri Lanka had to take a number of actions before considering the agreement at the staff level. These included the restoration of cost-recovery for electricity and fuel pricing.

She said that the Sri Lankan people and economy?had demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of the double?shocks? caused by Cyclone Ditwah as well as the Middle East conflict.

The IMF has pledged its unwavering support to Sri Lanka as it strives for a more stable economic system.
