K+S CEO calls for faster permits and lower energy costs to protect German industry

K+S, a German potash and sal miner, has called for Berlin to speed up permits for raw materials extraction projects and reduce energy costs.

"It's unacceptable that we, as a German company extracting raw materials, have to wait for years before receiving important permits. It has to happen faster. It can be done faster. "Other countries, like Canada, where K+S also has production facilities, show us what can be done", said K+S CEO Christian Meyer.

K+S invested about 600 million euros in its Werra plant. Meyer, however, said that high energy costs were impacting the company as well as the economy.

He added, "The situation is dramatic enough that the future of our industry is on the line."

German chemicals, Germany's third largest industry, has struggled for years due to a lack of demand, high energy prices, and supply chain problems, as well as global inflation and trade tensions.

Meyer stated that politicians must act now to remedy the situation. Reporting by Tristan Veyet, Jesus Calero and Patricia Weiss, Frankfurt; editing by Matt Scuffham.
