Overnight Russia strikes Ukraine power plant leaving residents in the freezing cold

Russian drone attacks have damaged a thermal plant in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, overnight. This has left at least 100,000 people in the cold without heat as temperatures plummet below freezing.

The President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Telegram that "this has nothing to do the fighting and the current situation at the front but it proves again that the Russians fight against our people and life in Ukraine."

They are fighting viciously without releasing the pressure. "This is not the behavior of those who are really preparing to negotiate and want peace restored."

Denys Shmyhal, the Prime Minister at the time, said that the attack on the plant was "done intentionally to leave people in sub-zero temperature without heat and create a human catastrophe."

The Russian military attacked Ukraine overnight with 143 drones, but the Ukrainian military claimed that it shot down 95 drones while 46 failed to reach their target. This is likely due to electromagnetic countermeasures which disrupt drone attacks.

Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least one person had been injured during the overnight attacks, which damaged homes in the Kyiv area. Mykolaiv's temperature is expected to drop to minus 7°C (19.4°F) on Sunday evening.

Zelenskiy urged Western Allies to provide Ukraine with more air defences. Russia holds 20% of Ukrainian territory, and is slowly making its way eastwards as the third anniversary of Moscow's invasion approaches.

He cited data showing that in the past week Russia had unleashed about 1,220 aerial bombs, over 850 drones and more than 40 missiles into government-controlled areas of Ukraine.

No immediate comment was made by Russia.

Both sides deny that they have targeted civilians in the conflict that Russia began with its invasion of Ukraine almost three years ago.

Zelenskiy wrote in a Telegram message that "Europe and the World must be better prepared to face such evil" and "better protected against it".

Together with Europe, America, and our other partners, we can bring an end to this war and create a lasting and just peace.

The U.S. president Donald Trump surprised his European allies as well as Ukraine by calling Putin this week without consulting them beforehand or Kyiv and declaring that peace talks would begin immediately.

Trump's Ukraine Envoy said that Europe will not have a place at the table during Ukraine peace negotiations, after Washington sent out a questionnaire asking European capitals what they could do to provide security guarantees to Kyiv.
