China will issue green yuan sovereign bonds in the UK for the first time

China's Finance Ministry announced on Wednesday that it will issue up to $6 billion ($829 millions) in yuan denominated sovereign green bonds at the London Stock Exchange. This is China's very first overseas issuance of these bonds. The announcement did not provide any further details. It came after a China and UK economic and financial discussion held in Beijing in January by British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

In a first announcement, the plan to issue green bonds was outlined in a policy statement that summarized the outcomes of the meeting. The finance ministry announced that China agreed to issue a yuan denominated sovereign green bond by 2025. This would be the first of a series of green sovereign issuances from China in the UK. The ministry published a framework document in February on China's green sovereign bonds. It called it an attempt to "attract foreign funds to support low-carbon and green domestic development." China committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2060 and bringing its carbon dioxide emission to a maximum before 2030 in 2020. In the years that followed, China's economy utilised financial instruments like green bonds more and more to achieve its goals. Ding Xuexiang told British Energy Minister Ed Miliband that China was willing to work with Britain to strengthen cooperation in low-carbon and green development.
