Japan to craft 2040 method of decarbonisation and industrial policy

The Japanese federal government will map out by the end of March next year a new national method including decarbonisation and industrial policy targeting 2040, industry ministry authorities said on Monday.

The relocation is aimed at setting out a long-lasting method to motivate financial investment to speed up decarbonisation and to boost the competitiveness of domestic industries.

Conversations to develop the method began on Monday during the Green Transformation (GX) execution conference, chaired by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The goal is to provide a proposition by year-end and finalise the strategy by the end of March, according to Yojiro Hatakeyama, director-general of industrial science, innovation and environment policy bureau at the industry ministry.

The world's fifth-largest co2 (CO2) emitter intends to cut emissions by 46% from 2013 levels by 2030 and attain net zero by 2050.

Last year, the federal government passed a law targeted at promoting decarbonisation investments amounting to more than 150 trillion yen ($ 962 billion) in the personal and public sectors over ten years.

The 2040 method is expected to refine last year's plan and provide more predictability of long-term investments while boosting the competitiveness of domestic companies and fostering economic development, Hatakeyama told reporters. ($1 = 155.8600 yen)
