Brazilian tourist found dead after four days in Indonesia on a volcano cliff

The Brazilian government announced that a woman from Brazil who fell over a cliff on saturday while hiking around Indonesia’s second-highest volcano was found dead Tuesday. This follows days of rescue attempts hampered due to adverse weather conditions.

Juliana Marins was hiking on Mount Rinjani with five friends when, according to Indonesian officials, she slipped off a cliff and fell down the side of the 3,726 meter (12,224 foot) mountain.

The active volcano in West Nusa Tenggara is a popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia.

The Brazilian government released a statement saying that after four days of hard work and despite the adverse weather conditions, terrain and poor visibility in the area, the Search and Rescue Agency of Indonesia found the body.

Muhammad Hariyadi, the head of the local rescuers, had said earlier that day that Marins did not fall into the volcano's crater but rather fell from a cliff. He also noted that because the sand was soft in that area it made it difficult for ropes to be used to recover her.

Rescue efforts involved 50 people.

Hariyadi stated that Marins who was first located on Saturday had slipped more on the sandy terrain. When she was first found, Marins was 150 meters below the surface. By Monday morning, however, she had reached a depth 500 metres.

In a press release, Indonesian Forestry minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that the Mount Rinjani hike track will be closed in order to facilitate the evacuation and to show respect for Marins and her loved ones.

Local media reported that several tourists, including foreigners have died while hiking the Volcano in the last few years. One Malaysian tourist also fell off a steep cliff just last month.
