Mexico rescues a survivor after US attacks kill 14 suspected drug traffickers

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Tuesday that a series of U.S. airstrikes against suspected drug vessels killed 14 drug traffickers, and only left one.

Hegseth wrote on X that the Mexican authorities had taken over the search and rescue operation for the lone surviving victim of the three attacks, which occurred on Monday.

Hegseth claimed that the four vessels had been known to our intelligence apparatus and were transiting along routes known for narcotrafficking, as well as carrying narcotics. He did not provide any evidence.

Hegseth, however, posted a video of about 30 seconds that appeared to show the explosion of two vessels in close proximity. In another part of the video, a moving vessel is seen in the water before it explodes.

The Pacific strikes come amid a U.S. buildup of military forces in the Caribbean, which includes F-35 fighters, guided-missile destroyers and a nuclear sub. The Ford carrier strike group has been ordered to the Caribbean by the administration. It is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.
