Iceland volcano spews lava and smoke for a 2nd day

A volcano south of Iceland's capital Reykjavik gushed smoke and lava for a 2nd day on Thursday although at a. significantly slower pace, authorities stated.

The eruption, the fifth considering that December, was one of the most. powerful in the area because volcanic systems on the Reykjanes. peninsula became active three years earlier after lying dormant for. eight centuries, according to the Icelandic Met Workplace.

Considering that yesterday afternoon, the activity at the volcanic. fissure (...) has decreased significantly, Iceland's Met Office. stated in a declaration on Thursday.

The fishing town of Grindavik, where just a few individuals have. returned after numerous homes were ruined by lava earlier this. year, was once again based on an evacuation order, as was the. nearby Blue Lagoon outdoor medspa, a significant tourist attraction.

Jona Runa Erlingsdottir, supervisor at a saltfish factory in. Grindavik, was working when the eruption started on Wednesday and. a siren was heard throughout the town.

We just had an hour to tidy up the place and get out,. Erlingsdottir told .

The fish factory resumed operations in April after being. transferred to a close-by town due to the previous eruptions. Big. dykes were built previously this year around Grindavik to. divert lava streams away from the town.

It was a little bit weird to start working there once again. and see the safety walls around the town. We do not have the very same. view like before, she stated.

I do not think it's ever going to be the very same in Grindavik. I'm just hoping that this is the last eruption, said. Erlingsdottir.

The met workplace said lava flows had actually reached the dykes developed. around Grindavik, diverting the molten rock west around the. town.

There were no reports of injuries following the eruption.

Keflavik airport, Iceland's biggest, was running as usual.
