The Russian budget deficit shrinks in March due to a rebound in energy revenues

The finance ministry reported that the Russian budget deficit for the three first months of this year was 607 billion roubles, or $6.56 billion, which is 0.3% of GDP. This figure was boosted by an impressive increase in energy revenue year-over-year, it said.

The oil and gas revenue was 79.1% more than it was a year earlier.

Early in 2023, Western sanctions imposed over the conflict with Ukraine including an oil embargo and a price cap on oil slashed Russia's energy revenue.

The ministry reported that non-oil and natural gas revenues rose by 43.2%. This was due to higher tax receipts than expected.

Moscow is expecting a sharp increase in budget revenue and expenditure this year. According to the ministry's budget plan, it plans to spend 36,7 trillion roubles this year and to earn 35,1 trillion roubles in revenue, despite a projected deficit of 0.9% for 2024.

The deficit in the first two quarters of this year was 1,47 trillion roubles or 0.8% GDP.

In the first quarter of 2016, Russia recorded a 1.2% deficit on its GDP, which is 2.09 trillion Russian roubles.

The increase in revenue this year compensates for the 20.1% rise in expenditure.

Since sending its army to Ukraine in February 20, 2022, Russia has poured more money into its military and defence industry. The combined spending on defence and security is expected to reach 40% of the budget this year.
