Italy eyes Westinghouse, EDF as partners for nuclear-power firm, sources state

Italy is thinking about U.S. energy group Westinghouse or France's EDF as potential global partners for a statebacked company that will develop advanced nuclear reactors in the nation, two sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

Nuclear-fired power plants are restricted in Italy following referendums in 1987 and 2011.

But the government prepares to draft by the end of this year rules to permit the usage of brand-new nuclear-power innovations, the energy minister said on Wednesday, repeating his objective of raising the ban.

The conservative administration headed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes small modular reactors and advanced modular reactors might help decarbonise the nation's most contaminating sectors, including steel, glass and tile makers.

EDF confirmed to Reuters it had an interest in supporting the Italian task.

We are keen to support the SMR option in Italy, an EDF representative stated, including the French group was in active talks with Italian companies and organizations through its Italian subsidiary Edison.

In July, EDF and Edison signed a memorandum of understanding with Italian state-owned Ansaldo Nucleare and the association of Italian steel makers Federacciai for using nuclear power in the sector.

Ansaldo Nucleare and start-up Newcleo would also belong to the government project to build SMRs, the sources stated. Newcleo declined to comment.

Westinghouse and EDF would be the very best (global). partners, one senior government source told Reuters.

Westinghouse was not immediately readily available to comment.
