Exclusive talks to be held between Italy and Azeri consortium on sale of Ilva Steelworks

Adolfo Urso, the Industry Minister, announced on Thursday that Italy would begin exclusive negotiations with an Azeri group about the sale Acciaierie d'Italia.

A person familiar with the matter stated that Baku Steel and Azerbaijan Business Development Fund are two of the investors who have expressed interest in acquiring ADI.

ADI is under state management after it struggled to maintain production amid high energy costs and low demand. This is a major problem for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melons because its closure could have a significant impact on the manufacturing sector of Italy.

Urso, a reporter at an event in Bologna (northern Italy), said: "The commissioners of the company have informed me beforehand that they are going to send a formal request to authorize them to negotiate with the Azeri group that has made the best offer."

Baku Steel, as well as the Indian company Jindal Steel International, raised their initial bids in February for ADI.

Last year, under a special administrative procedure, the government took over the ADI's Italian factories, ending weeks-long clashes between the ADI and ArcelorMittal. ArcelorMittal was the ADI's then largest shareholder. (Reporting and editing by Gavin Jones, Tomaszjanowski and Francesca Piscioneri)
