No disturbance in Indonesian elections, attorneys for Prabowo inform court

The legal team of Indonesian presidentelect Prabowo Subianto informed the Constitutional Court on Thursday that the state had not interfered in last month's election, and a case brought by his challengers to disqualify him must be tossed out.

Competing prospects Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan on Wednesday challenged Prabowo's resounding success, asking the court to order a new vote, and to disqualify both Prabowo and his vice presidential running-mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, kid of outbound President Joko Widodo.

Otto Hasibuan, one of the legal representatives on Prabowo's legal team, told the court there had been no violations or disturbance by the president or state institutions to sway the result of the Feb. 14 election.

These require re-election, disqualification, potentially trigger other problems that will result in constitutional crisis, Otto told the court.

Jokowi, as the president is commonly understood, has been accused of preferring his erstwhile rival Prabowo and kid Gibran, who were revealed winners of the election by the national poll body last week.

Gibran had the ability to partner with Prabowo after the Constitutional Court released a last minute ruling altering eligibility criteria. At the time, the court was led by Jokowi's. brother-in-law Anwar Usman.

Anwar has been barred from commanding election. disputes because an ethics panel found him guilty of infractions.
