ArcelorMittal will build a new steel plant to meet the demand of the auto industry in the US

ArcelorMittal announced on Thursday it will build a new advanced steel manufacturing facility at Calvert, Alabama to increase production to meet the demand of the U.S. automobile sector.

The second-largest steelmaker in the world said that the plant will be able deliver up to 150 kilograms of premium non grain-oriented electrical steel annually. This steel is used to manufacture larger vehicles such as full-size trucks and SUVs.

The company stated that the demand for advanced NOES was increasing in the U.S., while domestic supplies are limited. This should support an outlook of premium pricing for NOES produced by the new facility.

ArcelorMittal reported that the cost of the construction of the plant was estimated at $0.9 billion. Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2027.

Wards Intelligence reports that new car sales in the U.S. reached a five-year peak in 2024. Hybrid models were a major factor in this increase.

The automakers expect the strong sales will continue until 2025. However, President Donald Trump's proposed policies for the automotive sector, including removing tax incentives for electric vehicles, may present a wildcard to the industry.
