Chilean regulator charges Codelco smelter over emissions infraction

Chile's ecological regulator has actually submitted a charge against staterun miner Codelco over declared emissions offenses at its Potrerillos copper smelter in the Atacama area.

The Superintendency of the Environment stated in a declaration that an audit revealed Codelco had not executed a monitoring system for sulfur dioxide emissions and other treatments in accordance with SMA standards at the center.

The SMA identified the charge as severe, the second of 3 levels of offenses, and stated it could lead to a fine of about 4 billion pesos ($ 4 million), along with possible cancellation of the ecological permit, or closure.

The audit concluded that the system has not been carried out. Based upon all these antecedents, and after legal analysis, the Superintendency of the Environment charged non-compliance by the owner, the declaration said.

Codelco did not right away respond to an ask for comment.

The business has 10 days to send a compliance strategy, and 15 days to provide a defense.
