Olympics-Taekwondo-Italy's Dell Aquila bows out to newbie Olympian in semi-finals

Italy's taekwondo champ Vito Dell Aquila bowed out to firsttime Olympian Gashim Magomedov in the males's flyweight semifinals at the Paris Games on Wednesday, blaming injury for his poor performance.

Azerbaijan's Magomedov, who ranked 5th in flyweight in the world champions of 2022 and 2019, quickly beat the Tokyo gold medallist Dell Aquila 9-4 11-1.

Magomedov is the only professional athlete representing his country at the 2024 Olympics.

I wish to state alhamdulillah (appreciation be to God), dreams come true, Magomedov, the only Azerbaijani in the taekwondo, informed Reuters after the match.

I remain in (the) finals, included Russia-born Magomedov, 24. Many years I think of this, but I do not understand. I'm speechless, sibling. I'm speechless. I can't comprehend, bro. I enter the final.

Dell Aquila was one of Italy's best hopes for a medal in taekwondo in Paris. He informed reporters a left-adductor injury had actually avoided him from going after the fast-moving Magomedov.

I was really ready, I remained in leading physical shape due to the fact that I was training a lot ... however I fought like a damaged man, Dell Aquila told reporters.

I got by in the first two matches, because I had not injured myself excessive. But he was tough due to the fact that ... you needed to chase him with your legs and I can't do that at the moment.

Magomedov is set to fight South Korea's Park Tae-joon in the final later on Wednesday.
