Sources say that Trump will sign executive orders to boost the coal industry

Two sources with knowledge of the matter said that U.S. president Donald Trump would sign executive orders Tuesday to boost the coal industry in the United States.

The White House announced that Trump, who ran on a campaign promise to increase U.S. production of energy and has tried to rollback a range energy and environmental regulations ever since he took office in January 20, will sign orders related to energy at the White House.

According to a source who was briefed about the details, Trump will sign executive orders that direct the Interior and Energy Departments take action to support the industry. The two sources asked to remain anonymous because they weren't authorized to speak in public.

At the dawn of the 20th century, coal accounted for more than half the U.S. electricity. According to the Energy Information Administration, its share has dropped to less than 20 percent.

Trump has long criticised Democrats for targeting coal in environmental regulations and teased actions to support the industry. (Reporting and writing by Jarrett Renshaw, Tim Gardner and Susan Heavey; editing by David Goodman and Barbara Lewis).
