Heavy rains in Australia's east spark flash flooding, rescues

Heavy rain brought flash flooding to Australia's biggest city, Sydney, on Saturday, triggering rescues and evacuation orders for a number of lowlying residential areas.

Emergency situation authorities stated they performed 13 rescues and received 297 calls for assistance from residents in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales state, in the 24 hours to 5 a.m. local time, since of floods stimulated by the heavy rain.

Ten emergency evacuation orders remained in place for residential areas in the city's northwest, the New South Wales State Emergency Situation Service (SES) said in a declaration on Saturday morning.

The country's weather forecaster cautioned that significant flooding might take place in the northwest of Sydney, a city of about 5 million, later Saturday.

Sydney's Hawkesbury-Nepean valley is a floodplain vulnerable to hazardous flooding, as it is fed by five tributaries and has chokepoints limiting flows to the sea, so water backs up during heavy rain.

SES Acting Assistant Commissioner Dallas Burnes informed the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that there was still a great deal of water moving and urged affected citizens to be prepared to leave their homes.
