Group says that Colombian coal production could increase by 40% in 2030 if the right measures are taken

Fenalcarbon, the Colombian coal industry's association, said that if certain steps are taken by 2030 the country's production could reach 90 million metric tonnes. This is up from the group's forecast for a 53 million metric ton annual production in 2026.

The group stated that the increase will require changes to taxation, port and freight costs, licensing, and control on illegal mining.

In 2016, Colombia produced over 90 million metric tonnes of coal. This was followed by a close second in 2017, with 89.4 millions metric tons.

Colombia is one of the five biggest coal exporters in the world, with 90% to 95%?of its output going overseas. Exports fell 31% to $4.9 billion in 2012, mainly due to restrictions imposed by former president Gustavo Petro (who was replaced earlier this month with President Abelardo De La Espriella).

Fenalcarbon's President Carlos Cante said that the country expects a new approach by the government that recognizes the importance coal and coke play in the economy and ends the tax strangulation that has been promoted over the past four years.

"Colombia will certainly be able to return to 90 million tonnes within three or four years, once the conditions are right."

Luis Francisco Madrinan, vice minister of energy for the country, said that the new government would review 330 decrees from the previous administration which affect the mining and power generation industries.

He said, "We are evaluating all of the coal 'operators in Colombia and evaluating options that will?make Colombia more competitive." He said that the Petro ban on coal exports from Colombia to Israel is one of the measures to be scrapped. Nelson Bocanegra, Cynthia Osterman and Cynthia Osterman contributed to the reporting.
