What OPEC+ oil production cuts are in place today?

After agreeing to the first reduction in output in 2022, OPEC+ producers have implemented three levels of cuts. Eight OPEC+ oil producers have begun to increase production this year and unwind the most recent tranche.

Sources said that the 22-member OPEC+ group will meet online on Wednesday. This meeting is not expected change policy on output. Eight OPEC+ members plan to meet on Saturday and decide on a July production increase.

Algeria, Iraq and Kuwait are the eight countries that have met earlier this year to discuss their production targets. They raised them by almost 1 million barrels a day for April, May, and June. This is just over 1% daily global demand. The eight countries still have 1.2 million barrels per day of the latest cut.

Here is a brief explanation of how the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) and its allies make decisions.

Current Output Cuts

OPEC+ member countries are cutting their output by a combined total of 5.3 millions bpd, or around 5% of the global demand.

There are three parts to this:

1. All OPEC+ member countries agreed to a 2.00 million bpd target, which was extended in December last year by an additional year until 2026. The previous deadline for achieving this goal was 2025.

2. The voluntary cutbacks of 1.65 million bpd by eight countries (Algeria Iraq Kazakhstan Kuwait Oman Russia Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates and United Arab Emirates) were extended in December last year by one year, from the previous end of 2020.

3. The voluntary cutbacks of 2.20 million bpd by eight countries (Algeria Iraq Kazakhstan Kuwait Oman Russia Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates and other) were extended by three months in December last year, from the end December 2024 to the end March 2025.

The group of eight, since their December meeting, has taken a number of decisions in order to speed up the release of these barrels to the market. This was originally scheduled for the end of September, 2026.

- March 3, they agreed to go ahead with the planned increase of 138,000 BPD in

April.

They shocked the market on April 3, announcing they would be accelerating their production increase schedule. Instead of the 135,000 bpd planned, they will release an additional 411,000 BPD in May.

They announced on May 3 that they would increase production by 411,000 bpd for June. This will bring the production up to nearly 1 million BPD in April, May, and June. The total reduction in production is now just over 5 million BPD.

Reports stated that the group eight was considering a further 411,000 bpd for July, and unwinding this remainder by the end October.

4. According to the agreement signed in December last year, the United Arab Emirates received a higher production quote, which allowed it to gradually increase output by 300,000.bpd from April 2025, three months later than originally planned, until September 2026.
