Ukraine in talks with EU to increase electrical energy imports, minister states

Ukraine is negotiating to increase possible imports of electricity from European Union nations to compensate for the generation capability ruined by the Russian attacks, Ukrainian energy minister stated on Friday.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy sector have heightened because March, resulting in significant damage and blackouts in many regions.

The attacks have triggered more than $1 billion of damage to the sector, causing the loss of 8,000 MWh of generating capacity from the energy system, the federal government says.

Currently, Ukraine can import from the EU specifies no more than 1,700 Mwh of electricity all at once.

We're working out. Our job is to maximise this figure, Energy Minister German Galushchenko told parliament.

Technically, we can get (import) more than 2,000 Mwh, even 2,400 Mwh. I'm sure a decision will be made, he included.

Volodymyr Kudrytskiy, the head of Ukraine's nationwide power grid operator Ukrenergo, told Ukraine's Telegraf that 1,700 Mwh is the ceiling for now.

Everything will depend on how quickly our European coworkers - energy system operators of neighbouring countries - will be able to implement tasks to expand the capacity of their grids, Kudrytskiy stated.

He said that European grid business require time and money to strengthen some of their substations, set up additional transformers or build brand-new transmission lines.

We believe 3,500 to 4,000 Mwh of interstate interconnector capability is something we can have in the horizon of 5 years, Kudrytskiy kept in mind.

IMPORTS

Energy minister Galushchenko did not state exactly how much imports are being discussed now, however Maxim Timchenko, the head of Ukraine's biggest private energy business, DTEK, said previously this month that a boost to 2,200 Mwh could significantly enhance the scenario.

DTEK has lost about 90% of its power generation capability due to Russian missile attacks in current months.

DTEK data revealed that Ukraine taken in around 13,000 Mwh before the attacks since March 17 however after a series of Russian attacks on the energy system, intake fell to 9,100 Mwh.

Due to power lacks, Ukrainian power grid operator Ukrenergo has actually been required to present routine shutdowns of commercial customers and homes and maintain high import rates.

Issues with power generation can have a potentially. negative effect on market, especially the biggest electrical power. consumers, the economy ministry said this week.
