French court dismisses TotalEnergies suit against Greenpeace France

A Paris judicial court on Thursday dismissed a TotalEnergies claim versus Greenpeace France over accusations that the oil giant underreported its 2019 greenhouse gas emissions, a court file seen revealed.

The ruling said that the ecological group's accusations were too broad for them to be examined by the court.

A TotalEnergies declaration said the business was keeping in mind of the court ruling and was considering its options.

Greenpeace France explained the judgment as a snub for TotalEnergies and a victory for liberty of speech.

TotalEnergies informed investors it released 455 million metric lots of CO2 equivalent in 2019 which the business was on track to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

Greenpeace, mentioning estimations by a hired environment consultancy, Factor-X, countered that the main tally was closer to 1.64 billion heaps and asked the French Financial Markets Authority (AMF) to release sanctions versus the business for the alleged reporting error.

In May 2023 TotalEnergies took legal action against Greenpeace France and Factor-X, asking the Paris judicial court to rule that the publication included incorrect and deceptive info and to order a withdrawal of the report under penalty of 2,000 euros ($2,158) in fines each day.
