Nigerian troops kill 18 militants during northeast operations, the military reports

The military reported that Nigerian troops killed 18 'Islamist militants' and destroyed several insurgent camps in coordinated operations across the 'Borno State, as the security forces increased pressure on Islamists groups in the northeast.

Borno is about the size of Ireland. For 17 years, Boko 'Haram, its splinter groups, and Islamic State West Africa Province have waged an insurgency that has resulted in thousands of deaths and 2 million people being displaced.

Sani Uba, a military spokesperson, said troops working with air force units and local auxiliary forces carried out offensives on the Timbuktu and Bulabulin forests to target hideouts. Uba stated in a statement that 11 militants had been killed in Bulabulin, and 7 in the Timbuktu region.

The operation is part of a 'ongoing campaign' aimed at destroying insurgent bases across the region following a recent attack on military bases which killed?several soldiers including senior officers.

Uba stated that air support was providing surveillance and precision strikes, as well as a follow-up operation to track escaping fighters. Adewale Klawole reported from Maiduguri, Elisha Gbogbo wrote the article and Alex Richardson edited it.
