South Korean motorcycle rider found dead after falling into sinkhole measuring 20 metres

Rescue officials said that a motorcyclist found dead in a sinkhole measuring 20 metres (65.62 feet) deep was discovered on Tuesday. A driver of a vehicle narrowly escaped with minor injuries.

Kim Chang-seob, a fire rescue official who spoke at a press briefing, said that the body of a 33-year old man was discovered 50 metres from the centre collapsed sinkhole of a subway tunnel being constructed. The depth of the tunnel is almost 20 metres below the surface.

He said it took the rescuers 18 hours to find the motorcyclist, after they had to dig through dirt and pump out water, and navigate around construction equipment and debris. The exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

Officials from the city said that the cause of collapse is being investigated.

Dashboard camera footage shows the car bounce violently when its rear wheels barely clear the hole. The motorcycle and rider then plunge into the chasm. (Reporting and editing by Ed Davies.)
