EU Commission delays announcement of plan to phase-out Russian energy imports

A schedule released on Wednesday showed that the European Commission had, for a third time, postponed its announcement about its plan to reduce the region's dependence on Russian energy imports. The original date was March 26, but it has now been pushed back to an unknown date.

The Commission refused to comment on the new date.

In November, Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen stated at a parliament hearing that the plan would be presented during his first hundred days as a commissioner. However, this date has been delayed twice. Originally, the plan was to be unveiled in February.

After Russia's full-scale invasion in Ukraine began in 2022, the EU set a non-binding target to stop Russian gas imports by 2027. Despite this, a few member states have not done much to diversify their gas supplies and Russian imports increased last year.

The 27-member bloc must balance energy security with a desire to lower prices in order to maintain its competitiveness against rivals from China and the United States where energy costs can be several times cheaper.

Later on Wednesday, the Commission will announce a new extension of the gas storage target. Critics say that the targets could push up gas prices already high and should be flexible. (Reporting and Editing by Bernadettebaum)
