India and Canada strike uranium agreement by the end of the year, aim to reach a trade pact

India and Canada aim to conclude a free-trade pact before the end of the year, said Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday, during his 'first visit to New Delhi. The two countries are trying to overcome years of diplomatic friction in order to restore economic ties.

Narendra Modi, Indian PM, said during a joint appearance with Carney that he and Ottawa hoped to increase their bilateral trade from $9 billion to $50 billion between 2030.

The Indian Foreign Ministry added that the two sides had?agreed on the terms of reference for a comprehensive economic relationship.

Both sides confirmed that they had also agreed to a C$2.6billion ($1.9billion) uranium agreement and would work together on the construction of small modular reactors as well as?advanced nuclear reactors. Modi stated that "in civil nuclear energy we have concluded a landmark deal for?long-term supplies of uranium".

Carney said that the Indian government and Canada’s Cameco signed an uranium agreement to support India’s nuclear ambitions, and to work toward a clean and reliable base-load power.

The relationship between India and Canada was strained in 2023, after Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder of a Canadian Sikh Separatist. New Delhi dismissed this accusation as "absurd".

The dispute grew and resulted in the expulsion of diplomats, and the freezing of trade negotiations. Carney's India visit will?reset ties as both countries seek to diversify their trade away from the United States as a result of tariff announcements. They also want to?deepen their cooperation in areas like clean energy, essential minerals, and agricultural value chains. India signed a free trade agreement with the European Union (EU) in January. It has recently suspended?negotiations on a proposed deal with the United States, hoping to resume them once there is more clarity after President Donald Trump's new tariffs are invalidated. $1 = 1.3653 Canadian Dollars (Reporting and editing by Himani Sarkar, YP Rajesh and Himani Sarkar)
