Codelco, a Chilean lithium company, forms a joint venture with Quiborax

The companies announced on Thursday that Codelco, Chile's state-owned miner, and Quiborax, a Chilean acid manufacturer had formed a joint venture in order to obtain a specialized?lithium contract for the Salar de Ascotan salt flats located in the north of Chile.

Minera Ascotan SpA is a partnership that has an initial stake of 34% for Codelco, and 66% for Quiborax. However, once the contract is obtained, it will look for a new partner to become the majority.

DETAILS OF THE DEAL

* The companies applied as a group for the contract in January 2025.

The Mining Ministry will?present to Chile's Comptroller-General the terms of a new joint venture, and its contract in the coming weeks.

* Codelco named Jaime San Martin, Felipe Killian, and Allsen Fosk as directors. Quiborax appointed Ignacio Riva Posse, Yatsen Le, and Allsen Fosk.

Why it Matters

Salar de Ascotan, Chile's third largest salt flat in terms of surface area and underground content.

There is a lot of exploration potential in the?salt plain.

The venture is part a broader 'National Lithium Strategy' to ensure that Chile maintains its leadership in the global lithium industry.
