Valterra Platinum expects its full-year profits to double due to metal prices rebound

Valterra Platinum, a South African company, said it expected its annual profit to rise as high as 106% on the back of record-breaking platinum prices.

Valterra stated that it now expects to earn between $1.07 billion and $957.51 billion in the year ending December 31. This is up from $8.4 billion the previous year.

In a trading announcement, the company said that the earnings were boosted by the 26% price increase for the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) basket, as well as the 5 billion rand reductions in operational costs. These cost savings more than offset inflation and the 1.7 billion rand one-off costs related to demerger.

Valterra is the top producer of platinum in the world by value. It was separated from its former parent company Anglo American, which underwent restructuring, last May.

On Friday, spot platinum prices reached a record high of $2,684.43 per ounce, up by 27% over the past year.

Platinum, used in catalytic converters to curb vehicle emissions, is a precious metal that is gaining value due to the European Union's U turn on a combustion engine ban for 2035, tight supply, and rising demand.

Valterra will release its financial results for 2025 on February 25, 2019. Reporting by Nelson Banya, Editing by Joe Bavier. $1 = 16.1540 Rand
