British unions announce strike tally for Tata Steel employees

British trade unions Unite and Community, which represent thousands of members at Tata Steel Ltd's Port Talbot steelworks, said on Friday they will start the balloting process for commercial action.

The move comes after Tata Steel stated last month that it would close its 2 blast heaters in Britain by the end of this year, with the loss of up to 2,800 tasks at its Port Talbot steelworks in Wales.

Unite will formally alert Tata of its objective to tally for industrial action on March 1, and industrial action might begin before the end of April, the union stated in a statement.

Industrial action is constantly a last resort however Tata's. actions suggest we now need to prepare for that scenario, Roy. Rickhuss, general secretary of Community union said in a. different declaration.

Much of our existing iron and steelmaking operation in Port. Talbot is at completion of its life, is undependable and inefficient,. and adding to losses of 1.7 million pounds ($ 2.14. million) a day in the last quarter alone, a Tata Steel. representative stated.

Our restructuring propositions would indicate that we have the ability to. sustain business, the representative included.

Tata Steel has started a formal info sharing and. consultation process with its trade union colleagues and the. discussion will cover the support to be offered impacted. employees, the company representative said.
