Vice presidency of South Sudan says that South Sudan security forces have released the peacebuilding Minister.

After the arrests and tensions escalated, a spokesman of Machar announced that the South Sudanese loyalists to President Salva Kir have released the minister of peacebuilding, a key ally for First Vice President Riek Machar.

Security forces have arrested or placed under house arrest, between Tuesday and Thursday, several allies to Machar. These include the Petroleum Minister, the Peacebuilding Minister and a Deputy Head of the Military. This has put at risk a peace agreement that ended the civil war between fighters loyal Kiir and Machar.

Stephen Par Kuol, the minister of peacebuilding who was illegally detained by National Security yesterday, along with three members of his staff from his office was released at 05:00 this morning," Machar’s spokesman Puok both Baluang told X.

Baluang said that the petroleum minister and deputy head of the military remained in custody Friday.

Baluang reported earlier this week that security forces were also stationed around Machar's home, although he was still able to get to his office.

The arrests came after heavy clashes between the national forces and White Army, a loosely organised group mainly from the Nuer ethnic group, Machar.

The White Army fought with Machar's troops in the civil war of 2013-2018, which pitted them up against mainly ethnic Dinka forces loyal to Kiir.

The government hasn't commented on the arrests. Michael Makuei, the Information Minister, accused Machar's supporters of working with the White Army to attack a military base near Nasir.

Machar's Party has denied any involvement in the fighting.

South Sudan is officially at peace after the 2018 agreement that ended the five-year war which killed hundreds of thousands. However, violence between rival communities still flares up regularly.

Machar met with officials from the African Union, the United Nations and the regional bloc IGAD on Thursday. They urged the parties to bring calm back to Upper Nile State where Nasir lies. (Reporting and editing by Ammu Kanampilly, Aidan Lewis; Reporting by George Obulutsa)
