United States ready to resume oil stockpile if gas rates surge once again, feet reports

The Biden administration is all set to release more oil from the U.S. tactical stockpile to stop any jump in fuel rates this summer season, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Senior Biden advisor Amos Hochstein informed the newspaper that oil costs are still too high for many Americans and he would like to see them cut down a little bit further.

Hochstein, talking to the FT said that the U.S. would continue to purchase into next year, till we think that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has the volume that it requires again to serve its original purpose of energy security

The Energy Department this year has actually been purchasing about 3 million barrels of oil per month for the SPR after offering 180 million barrels in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The relocation was an effort to curb fuel costs that surged to more than $5.00 a gallon, however it also lowered the reserve to its least expensive level in 40 years.

Previously this month, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told that the U.S. might accelerate the rate of replenishing the SPR as maintenance on the stockpile is completed by the end of the year.
