Wildfires in South Korea have killed at least four people

The Korea Forest Service reported on Sunday that at least four people were killed and six injured as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames during a dry, windy climate.

Authorities said that over 9,000 personnel and 105 helicopters had been deployed to put out the fires, which engulfed areas mainly in the southeast part of the country. The fires damaged residential buildings as well as a temple.

Choi Sangmok, acting president of the Republic of Korea, told a meeting on disaster response that more than 1,500 people took refuge as fires destroyed 6,300 hectares (16,000.4 acres) worth forest.

Choi, who vowed that he would use all resources available to put out the fires, said: "I request the Korea Forest Service to pay special attention to the safety of the personnel responsible for extinguishing the wildfires on the ground or in the air."

According to the Yonhap News Agency, three of the four victims were firefighters while the fourth was a civil servant.
