Sweden's SSAB to invest $4.8 bln in fossil-free steel mill

Swedish steelmaker SSAB will invest 4.5 billion euros ($ 4.83 billion) in developing a fossilfree minimill in Lulea, Sweden, the company said on Tuesday.

Start-up of the mill, which will have an annual capacity. of 2.5 million tonnes, is expected by the end of 2028 with full. capability one year later, it added.

The business estimated the yearly improvement on profits. before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). would be more than 5 billion Swedish crowns ($ 463 million) at. the current product cost forecasts.

The new mini-mill will have a better cost position with. lower set costs, higher effectiveness, much shorter preparations and. removed CO2 costs, SSAB said.

The business's improvement of its Oxelosund mill to cut. emissions was proceeding as prepared, SSAB stated.

The timing of a comparable scheduled improvement of its. Raahe steel mill in Finland will depend on the business's. funding and execution capacity, along with the knowings from. the Lulea job, the group stated.
