Xcel Energy will power a new Google datacenter in Minnesota

Xcel Energy announced on 'Tuesday that it had partnered with Google in order to 'power the tech giant’s new data centre in Pine Island, Minnesota. while contributing 1,900 Megawatts a new - clean energy to the grid.

The U.S. is expecting its power consumption to rise rapidly in the coming years, mainly due to the rapid expansion of data centers, which are used for artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency.

Utility companies have invested billions of dollars to upgrade the electric grid in order to meet this demand. However, this has led some customers to worry about their?bills increasing.

Xcel stated that the project will not increase?costs to existing customers as?Google pays all costs for its service in accordance with Minnesota's legislative and regulatory requirements for large loads.

The company stated that the project would add 1,400MW of wind energy capacity and 200MW of solar power, as well as 300MW of energy storage for long duration. Xcel will also invest $50 million in its?Capacity*Connect Program.

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has increased its efforts to secure sources for?powering its data centers across the nation.

AES Corp had signed a 20-year contract with the company earlier in the day to?supply energy to the U.S. Tech giant's planned new data center in Wilbarger County in Texas.
