In 2023, UK insurance payouts for home and business property will reach $6 billion.

The Association of British Insurers reported that the UK's homeowners and businesses received property insurance payouts of 6.07 billion pounds (4.86 billion pounds) in 2023. This is an 18% increase from the previous year, due to weather-related claims.

The ABI reported that weather-related claims for home damage rose by 36%, to 573 millions pounds. Homes were battered last fall by a series of storms. The ABI said that high winds, storm debris and flooding, as well as burst pipes, were all factors in the losses.

Industry sources claim that insurance companies are seeing a higher number of claims due to natural disasters. They attribute this to climate change, and the increase in construction in areas subject to extreme weather.

They add that insurers are experiencing more storm losses in Britain and elsewhere in Europe than ever before, due to inflation and supply-chain issues, which have led to an increase in repair costs and, therefore, in payouts.

Swiss Re reports that the insured losses from winter storms in Northwestern Europe early in 2023 were more than four billion dollars, a significant increase over the 10-year average of $2.5 Billion, and above previous years.

Louise Clark, ABI's policy adviser, said: "We will continue to push the government to invest in flood defences and maintenance. We also call for changes to planning to discourage construction where flooding is more likely."

Recent data from ABI revealed that the average UK home insurance premium increased 13% annually in the fourth quarter 2023.
