Union claims that workers at TotalEnergies La Mede refinery are seeking compensation for exposure to benzene.

The CGT union announced that more than?180 employees and subcontractors of French oil giant?TotalEnergies?' La Mede refinery near Marseille will file?complaints at a French labor court on Wednesday in order to seek redress due to benzene contamination.

Workers exposed to chemicals such as benzene or other substances deemed harmful to health are suing energy companies. In some jurisdictions, courts award large amounts of money to the injured parties.

Lawyers for the Total workers claimed that the French system recognizes preventative claims. This means that "simply being exposed" is sufficient to pursue redress.

Compensation?for anxiety related harm is a form of claim which ensures that, in cases where workers are exposed to harmful substances that pose a serious pathology risk, the anxiety they experience will not be left unpunished, according to Jean Eudes Mesland Althoffer, a workers' lawyer.

Workers who develop illness as a result of exposure to asbestos can file a separate claim.

Mesland Althoffer said that the compensation for each worker could be several thousand Euros, but labour courts don't cap financial amounts.

TotalEnergies - which operates six French refineries, fuel depots, and pipelines - did not respond to an immediate request for comment about how many of its workers in France have been exposed to benzene. (Reporting and editing by Inti landauro, David Goodman and America Hernandez)
