Trump signss critical mineral executive orders to boost US production

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, said that he had signed an executive order on Thursday to increase domestic production of vital minerals and counter China's dominance of this sector.

The White House has not yet provided details about the executive order. Earlier reports suggested that Trump would use his national security powers and seek to increase production by building metals refineries on Pentagon bases.

Two sources familiar with the appointment said that former Newmont executive David Copley was named to oversee mining for the U.S. National Energy Dominance Council.

One source said that Copley's new position will make him the most senior person in the federal department responsible for shaping the mining policy.

Trump said Thursday that the United States would sign a deal on minerals and natural resource with Ukraine soon. (Reporting and writing by Jarrett Renshaw, Jeff Mason and Jasper Ward. Editing and proofreading by Ryan Patrick Jones, Sandra Maler and Ryan Patrick Jones)
