Perpetua will make an official loan request to US EXIM by the second quarter

Perpetua Resources announced on Thursday that it will submit a formal application for a loan to the U.S. Export-Import Bank in the second quarter this year. The project is an antimony-and-gold Stibnite mine located in Idaho.

The miner stated in its annual report that EXIM will determine whether a final commitment to lend might be issued.

Perpetua received from EXIM a non-binding letter of interest for a loan up to $1.8billion to develop its gold and antimony mine. This was reported in April.

The Stibnite mine project, if approved by the bank, would be Washington's biggest investment in a mining operation. The project's final mining permit was granted during the last phase of the former president Joe Biden’s presidency.

The U.S. imports antimony because it does not produce its own.

According to U.S. Geological Survey data, China will account for 60% of global antimony mining in 2024.

China has banned the export of metals to the United States since December 2012.

The Stibnite Mine would help the United States to increase domestic production of vital minerals and counter China's control in the sector.

Perpetua’s mine will be able to supply 35% of the annual US antimony demand once it is open by 2028. (Reporting and editing by Shreya biswas in Bengaluru, Seher Dareen from Bengaluru)
