EU could delay the first counter-tariffs to U.S. until mid-April

Maros SEFCIOVIC, European Trade Commissioner said Thursday that the European Union may delay imposing a first round of countermeasures against President Donald Trump over his steel and aluminum tariffs.

The European Commission proposed to reimpose tariffs on U.S. imports worth 4.5 billion euro ($4.9 billion) on April 1. This was followed by another 18 billion euro of U.S. exports on April 13th.

Sefcovic said at a European Parliament hearing that "we are now considering aligning the timing of both sets of EU countermeasures" so we can consult member states on both list simultaneously. This would also give us more time to negotiate with our American counterparts.

First, the EU will impose a tariff of 50% on U.S. Bourbon. Trump has threatened to impose a tariff of 200% on all EU wines and other alcoholic beverages if they go ahead.

Trump's administration also plans to impose further tariffs

Probably mistaken

The Italian prime minister Giorgia Mello warned her EU partners against an escalation of the trade dispute between the United States and the EU on Tuesday.

Meloni, a close friend of Trump's, stated: "I don't think that adding more tariffs to the existing ones is a great idea."
