Ford postpones some North American electric SUV, truck production

Ford Motor stated on Thursday it had delayed the prepared launches of threerow EVs in Canada and its nextgeneration electrical pickup integrated in Tennessee as the slowdown in EV need globally forces automakers to revise production strategies.

Ford said independently it was improving hybrid electric lorry offerings and by 2030 expects to use hybrid powertrains across its lineup of gas-powered vehicles.

We are dedicated to scaling a profitable EV service, using capital wisely and giving market the right gas, hybrid and fully electric cars at the correct time, Ford CEO Jim Farley said.

Ford, which lost nearly $4.7 billion on its EV organization in 2023 and predicted it will lose $5 billion to $5.5 billion this year, stated in February the next generation of EVs will be released just when they can be rewarding.

Ford shares were up 1.4% in midday trading.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based car manufacturer said it would push back the launch of the brand-new big EV SUV it will build at its assembly complex in Oakville, Ontario to 2027 from 2025 to enable the consumer market for three-row EVs to even more establish and make it possible for Ford to take advantage of emerging battery technology. Separately, Ford said it will postpone deliveries of an all-new EV truck it will develop at a brand-new plant in western Tennessee up until 2026. Ford said in 2015 it planned to begin production in late 2025 and develop to 500,000 electric trucks yearly at the plant.

Ford said it plans to start client deliveries of the new truck in 2026 and slowly increase production to help assure quality.

Ford Chief Financial Workplace John Lawler informed financiers last year the automaker would postpone a few of its prepared multibillion-dollar financial investment in brand-new EV and battery production capability.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last month softened EV requirements beginning in 2027 from its initial proposal and even more incentivized plug-in hybrid vehicles.

During contract bargaining in 2020 with Canada's Unifor union, Ford promised to invest $1.8 billion and retool the Ontario plant to make EVs. Ford on Thursday said the overhaul of the Oakville assembly plant is set to begin by June 30 as planned.
