Zambia's mining regulator suspends operation at Mopani Mufulira Mine

Zambia's mining regulator said on Friday that it had suspended operations at Mopani Copper Mines' Mufulira Mine after it failed to?report?for all of its underground personnel.

In a press release, the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC) said that its decision was based on recent accidents at Mopani’s operations.

The commission stated that the Mufulira Mine had failed to comply with regulations which require management to maintain a "system to account for all people working underground" at any time.

The commission stated that "Operations are suspended until the mine corrects all deficiencies found in its personnel accounting system".

It also said that it would conduct a comprehensive audit on?all assets of Mopani, including the larger Nkana mine.

Mopani Copper Mines did not respond immediately to a comment request.

Zambia is Africa's second-largest producer of copper, a metal essential for clean energy technologies.

In 2024, the International Resources Holding (IRH), a subsidiary of the United Arab Emirates, acquired 51% in Mopani for $1.1 billion.

Zambia's ZCCM Investments Holdings is the owner of the balance.

The IRH plans to spend $300 million on increasing Mopani's copper production to around 200,000 metric tonnes from the current 70,000 metric tonnage.

Zambia's copper production?was 820.670 metric tonnes in 2025, an increase from 732.580 tons last year.

The country in southern Africa aims to increase copper production by 2031.
