Potanin, a Russian billionaire, is interested in rare earth metal exploration

Vladimir Potanin is the CEO and majority shareholder of Nornickel. He said that he was considering rare earth projects, pointing out that there has been little research done on reserves in Russia and Russian controlled Eastern Ukraine.

In recent months, the U.S. president Donald Trump's efforts against China's dominance of this sector have attracted global attention.

Many deposits on our territory and in the new Russian territories have not been explored enough. Potanin, a reporter, said that many geological studies were lost and their results after the Soviet Union.

All of this must be restored immediately. "We are thinking about it and working on this," he said. Potanin did not make it clear in his remarks if Nornickel was involved.

Vladimir Putin offered to explore Russia's rare-earth metal deposits with the U.S. under a future deal. He claimed that they were more extensive than the ones in Ukraine.

Potanin said that because of the small size and difficult exploration conditions of many deposits, Russian companies will need partners with the technology to provide.

Potanin stated that "technological support from different partners would be beneficial to us, as these are complex projects."

Nornickel is a global leader in the production of nickel and palladium. However, it does not currently hold any exploration licenses. (Reporting and editing by Olesya Almakhova and Gleb Brnski)
