Polish government drops coal merger idea, considering mines tie-ups instead

Polish federal government is abandoning plans to separate coalfired power plants into a. unique business and is thinking about merging them with mines, stated. Industry Minister Marzena Czarnecka in a interview published on. Wednesday in Rzeczpospolita daily.

The previous federal government's plan presumed the creation of one. large state-owned business NABE, that would pool the properties of. power plants creating energy from coal. According to. the Minister of Industry, this is not a good idea.

The problem of coal assets would not be fixed, but just. moved to the state treasury, i.e. onto the shoulders of. taxpayers. The NABE task will not be executed, she stated. in an interview.

Czarnecka stated that connecting coal-fired power plants with. mines is being considered rather and the ministry will talk to. banks to develop a ideal and appropriate model for them, so. that they can finance the green transformation of energy groups.

However, I am persuaded that there is no other way than to. appoint a given power plant to an offered mine. Otherwise, this. procedure will not take place, she said.

In July, we must provide a strategy to 'designate' particular. mines to specific power plants. In September, we will present. legal services on how to execute this concept. We want to. complete this procedure of arrangements this year.
