Sources and war monitors say that gunmen killed dozens of people in a Syrian Alawite village

Two Alawite activists, and a war observer, said that gunmen killed at least 20 male residents of a rural coastal town in Syria on Friday. They cited contacts in the area and video footage taken from the scene.

The location of the video was confirmed as Al Mukhtareyah near the M4 highway using satellite imagery, a road, a building, trees, and a utility post. The video showed 20 men, some of whom were bloodied, lying close together by the roadside in the centre of the town.

It was not possible to verify the exact date and who filmed the video, but the direction of the shadows indicated that it had been filmed early in the morning within the last two months. The location was not able to confirm what happened independently.

The former Syrian president Bashar al Assad, who has been ousted last year by rebels turned rulers Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, heavily cited the Alawite Community for the former security apparatus of the Syrian State and its bureaucracy.

Alawite activist say that violence and attacks have been perpetrated against their community since Assad's fall, especially in rural Homs & Latakia.

Rami Abdulrahman of the UK's Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that local sources told his organization that 38 Alawite men had been executed in the town.

"Gunmen from Idlib arrived in the early morning hours and took the men into custody, while the women were told to stay at home. Abdulrahman claimed that the men were executed.

Two Alawite activists who spoke under condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue said that the killings took place on Friday, and they blamed gunmen associated with Syria's newly islamist-led ruling authority.

Text messages seeking comments from a government spokesperson or two officials connected to the ruling power did not receive a response.

Security forces from Idlib, and the surrounding areas have sent reinforcements into the coastal area to suppress a nascent rebellion by fighters who they claim are linked to Assad.

Abdulrahman stated that the observatory has verified other incidents where Alawite males have been killed or humiliated in the last 24 hours, including being forced to bark like dogs. Could not independently confirm these reports.
