Bloomberg reports that the US Energy Secretary is seeking $20 billion for a replenishment of oil reserves.

Bloomberg News reported Friday that U.S. Energy Sec. Chris Wright intends to seek up $20 billion in order to achieve President Donald Trump's aim of filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at its maximum capacity.

Wright told Bloomberg News that in an interview, the initiative will restore holdings to "just near the top" of the list to maintain a high-quality operating status.

Wright, speaking to Bloomberg, said that the ultimate goal of the building was "to provide the maximum level of security for Americans".

The SPR, created in 1975 as a result of the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973, is designed to reduce the impact of disruptions in supply such as hurricanes and wars in producing countries.

Trump stated on his first official day that his administration will fill the SPR. This process would take years. He criticized Joe Biden for using the reserve to lower the price of gas.

SPR is currently the largest crude oil reserve in the world. It has a capacity of 727 million barrels, and currently stores about 395 millions barrels. The $20 billion that Congress must approve could buy 301 million US barrels at current prices and bring the reserve down to less than 700 millions barrels.

Biden's Administration sold nearly 300,000,000 barrels of reserve oil, including 180,000,000 barrels in 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

These sales have pushed the level of the reserve down to its lowest in over 40 years.

The administration of Biden purchased the last batch of oil to be used in the SPR back in November, with deliveries continuing until May this year. His administration also cancelled the congressionally mandated sale of oil from the reserve that both Republican and Democratic legislators had voted on.
