Russia's budget deficit narrows in May as month-to-month costs eases

Russia's budget deficit narrowed in May to 0.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) from 0.8% a month earlier, the finance ministry said on Monday, as regular monthly spending dropped to its least expensive up until now this year.

Total spending is still greatly higher than in 2023, up 18.9% in January-May, as Moscow funnels substantial financial resources to the defence sector for its war in Ukraine.
